Wake Up Devlog Week 19

My goal for this Sprint was to create models and icons for each item, as well as conducting my first playtest of Wake Up.


I used Blender to create simple, low poly models for each item; after implementing these to each item, I added a ‘rotating movement’ component to the item mesh in the item base, which I think looked a lot nicer than just the mesh sitting there statically.


The item icons are stored as a texture object ref in each item blueprint, and are added to the item icon widget to go in the item screen.



Since this didn’t take long to do, I had a lot of time to check through my project for glitches / technical issues before releasing the first Playtest build. To make the game as accessible to as many people as possible, I decided to add graphics settings this week, so people can change the resolution, window mode and graphics quality settings. This will allow people on lower-end hardware to run the game smoother.



I wouldn’t call the first playtest a success really. I did receive some very valuable feedback from one playtester, who gave various pieces of feedback concerning the structure of progress and difficulty of some enemies. However, the other two people who actually responded only gave so much information, not much of it useful as a user story.

However I did get some insights from them, such as one respondent thinking the walls / food needed more texture.



But going back to the first respondent, they offered a lot of useful feedback.

One of these insights was about the ‘High Gunner’ enemy, which they said was far too powerful- watching their gameplay I could see where they were coming from, the damage and health needed to be toned down by a decent bit to make them less overwhelming, as well as having less of them together in rooms.


As well as this, I overall found out that I needed some form of explanation in-game for how the room chase / weighting mechanic worked, as just about all the respondents expressed confusion about it at first.
